The first thing to know is that the CLSA University is not a quick in-and-out, 5-minute solution to solve your continuing education credit deficiencies. It requires an enrollment, just like a collegiate university. However, CLSAU has no application process, GPA requirement or other criteria to meet before you can enroll. All fitters and would-be fitters are welcomed and offered a placement exam to determine which course level will best suit one’s needs.
CLSA Members Get Priority Treatment
It’s true, rank has its privileges. If you are a CLSA member, more than 80% of the CLSA University is yours for free. Here’s how it works:
First, know your membership number. It’s on your membership card, but if you need it again, simply contact the CLSA office at (800) 296-9776. Here’s a suggested path:
- Go to www.clsa.info
- Click on the CLSA University logo (it’s the black and gold logo on the upper right side of the home page)
- From the CLSAU homepage, click "CLSA Courses" on the left menu bar. This will take you right into the course catalog. The course catalog is organized by level:
- Novice / Introductory — where you’ll find courses aimed at those with little or no experience in eye care. This level is well suited for the receptionist or non-contact lens fitter in the office that you want to gain more knowledge about contact lenses and the eye. Some members have also used the courses in this level for their patients, to explain what the contact lens fitter does, including parts of the eye.
- Level One — Basic — these courses are approved for NCLE Basic level c.e.
- Level Two — Intermediate — these courses are also all approved for NCLE Basic level c.e., and are at a higher level, geared for those with two or more years experience in contact lens fitting.
- Level Three — Advanced — these courses are approved for NCLE Advanced level c.e. and are at a higher level for those with expert level contact lens experience.
If you’re new to the CLSAU, you might want to first take the placement exam to determine which course level will best suit your needs. If you’ve been here before, or are familiar with the levels of education CLSA offers, then you can skip this step. It’s up to you.
All courses listed as “CUP” courses are free to members. Those that start with CU come with discounted member pricing. To receive the member price, you must register your member number in your CLSAU account. You only need to do this once, and thereafter, when you login to the CLSAU—you’ll be known as member.
Frequently Asked Questions About the CLSA University
I enter my membership number, but the CLSAU can't find it in the membership database.
Is your CLSA membership current? If not, your membership will not appear in the CLSAU. If you’re unsure, contact the CLSA office for verification.
I am having trouble logging in to the CLSAU.
First, make sure that you are using your CLSAU username, not your member number to login. This is a common issue and easy to confuse. If you have forgotten your password, ask for a password reminder at the login. You will receive an email which will start the process of getting a new password.
How do I pay for a course?
The CLSAU uses PayPal which allows members to send money without sharing financial information. It offers the flexibility to pay using bank accounts, credit cards or promotional financing. PayPal is extremely secure with more than 78 million active accounts in 190 markets and 19 currencies around the world. To pay for a course, go to the course you want to take and you’ll reach a point where you will be automatically sent to PayPal to pay for the course. You do not need your own personal PayPal account – it will accept your method of payment.
How long after I purchase a course do I have until the course goes away?
There is no limit on the length of time you have to use the course after you make the purchase. Once you purchase the course you’re enrolled in that class. You can choose to take it immediately, or wait as long as you want. You have unlimited access to the coursework, but … you can only take the test for c.e. credit twice. If you take it and fail to meet the 80% pass rate, you have just one more chance to pass. If you miss it both times you attempt, you’re done with that class and must take another class to get your credit.
How many c.e. credits do I need for my license or certification?
To be candid, CLSA has no idea. You must contact your state licensing board or the ABO/NCLE office for your certification. The ABO/NCLE Office number is (800) 296-1379.
How do I obtain my c.e. credits once I take the test?
Once you have passed the quiz for a course with a score of 80% or better, you can obtain your certificate by selecting "Certificate of Completion" from the drop-down box on the top-right or going back to the course's main page and clicking on "Certificate of Completion." Your certificate will be sent to the email address in your profile and the name in your profile will appear on the certificate. On some browsers, the certificate will launch in a PDF viewer as well so that you can print it immediately.
How do I change my name or email address?
To change either your name or email address, click on your name where it says "You are logged in as ..." Click on the “Edit Profile” tab. You can then edit your personal information. Click the save button at the bottom when you are done.
What courses have I taken? I need a summary report!
An official report of all the coursework you have taken is available through your Transcript. Once you log in to the CLSAU, you’ll see this message on the left side of the screen:
NEW!!! Access your CLSAU transcript here.....
Just click it and your official transcript will appear. You can print it and save for future reference, or bookmark the page and open it up again and again and again.
I just took a course, and when my co-worker took the same course, it was different.
The test was different, not the coursework itself. Each time the online test is viewed it appears in a different order on your screen than the time before. The answers are also scrambled with each view. Also know that the test questions will not appear in the same order as they did in the EyeWitness magazine.
I took a course last year, but now I don’t see it in the course catalog. What happened to it?
Courses approved for NCLE credit have a limited shelf life. They are approved for 3 or 5 years, depending on the subject matter—5 years for general subjects and 3 years for technical coursework. All courses come under review and a determination made if they should be re-submitted to NCLE for re-approval. During this review period, they are removed from the course catalog. So keep checking back. They may reappear shortly!
Can I use my CooperVision Frequent Fitter Points for the CLSA University?
Yes! This program instituted by CooperVision allows you to spend points accumulated through product purchases on CLSA educational programs. Points do have an expiration date – they’re only good for 2 years, and may be used for CLSA annual membership dues, educational materials from the CLSA Bookstore, CLSA University coursework, and CLSA meetings.
